MJ Rigby Biography

MJ Rigby’s paintings are in the collections of Saint Luke’s Hospital, BKD LLP,
Arvest Bank, Foulston Siefken LP, University of Kansas Hospital, the Midwest Transplant Network, and private collections nationwide.

MJ was born in Toronto, Canada in 1965 to parents with an affinity for art in all forms. As a young boy he spent long hours creating forms by building, destroying and drawing. MJ was fortunate enough to be mentored by Gallerist Peter Merwin while studying in France.

MJ received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Houston while experimenting with watercolor, ceramic and metal sculpture.  He further honed his skills at the University of Colorado where he received his Master of Architecture. He went on to practice architecture for several years, but in the end preferred painting.

MJ’s art comes as a counterpoint to architecture. The combination of shapes and colors represents a memory of a vista or more specifically a place and time. The input is a result of his recollection; however the subject matter or emotion is the responsibility of the viewer. The colors combine and intersect and border with a freedom that is not readily achieved in today’s architecture. His passion lies in the process and nuances of the piece are not revealed until it’s been completed.
